Research Status of Aluminum Nitride Powder Preparation Processes

The production technologies for aluminum nitride (AlN) powder include direct nitridation, carbothermal reduction, and other major methods, as well as various techniques such as self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), high-energy ball milling, in-situ self-reactive synthesis, plasma chemical synthesis, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD).

 

Carbothermal reduction is considered the most mature and commercially viable preparation technology for manufacturing high-quality AlN powder. This method has stringent requirements for the purity, particle size, and ratio of raw materials, while precise control of reaction temperature, decarburization temperature, and duration is also critical. In large-scale commercial production, the development of corresponding supporting preparation equipment is essential to ensure accurate control of process parameters, as well as to improve product yield and stability—its importance is self-evident.

 

In China's research field, the focus is primarily on the high-temperature self-propagating synthesis (SHS) method. Due to its lower cost, this method is suitable for further development to capture the mid-to-low-end AlN powder market. However, due to difficulties in controlling reaction speed and process parameters, this method is currently unsuitable for producing high-quality AlN powder.

 

Anti-hydrolysis performance is a unique and most closely watched post-treatment process for AlN powder. Currently, the mainstream commercial treatment method involves thermal processing, where a controlled amount of oxygen is introduced at high temperatures to form a dense aluminum oxide film on the surface of the AlN powder, thereby preventing the reaction between aluminum nitride and water. The current research focus is on chemically treating and modifying the surface of AlN powder to prevent water molecules from eroding the powder surface.

 

At present, reducing the production cost of AlN powder, improving conversion rates, decreasing impurity content in the powder, and lowering reaction energy consumption are urgent issues that need to be addressed in the preparation process.
